Hall of Famer. Gold medalist. Four-division titleholder and two-division champion. Pernell Whitaker is all of these things — and struggling financially so badly that he is evicting his 73-year-old mother from a house that he bought for her three decades ago so that he may sell it.

That’s according to a report from ******ia television station WVEC.

truth is most boxers come from poor families and are not educated and when they see all that money of course they over spend, they have no value of money and no one in their family does because all came up broke and lack education, not to many educated people actually choose to box...sure you have a few who are actually educated and those are the ones who actually keep their money..

It takes a certain type of mentality to pursue a career where you get punched in the head hard and suffer physical pain. Most do it to escape poverty. Few with alternatives choose to stay in the sport.

That mentality is not one of responsibility or careful planning. On the way up, the largely uneducated boxer doesn't have many people giving him sage advice. The ones with the biggest influence traditionally are the ones with the most to gain. The Don Kings of this world don't benefit from boxers with secure wealth. They benefit most when a boxer has to fight to maintain his living standards.

So you thrust these crazy kids into the spotlight with untold wealth and constant hangers on and people who pretend to like you and be there for you and then one day the purse is light and they all walk off to look after themselves and the boxer is left with nothing but his legacy to trade on.

Really there needs to be some kind of union in the sport which looks out for upcoming fighters. Soccer has it (PFA, LMA etc) as I'm sure many other sports do. Boxers? It is harder to put in place due to the individual nature of the sport. It is a chicken and egg scenario. A guy earns his purse then doesn't want to cut it any further after the promoter, the coach, the sparring partners, the friends, the hospitality, the hookers, the bars and the dealers have all taken their chunks out of it. Those that could afford to invest in such a union are seeing so much wealth that they think they don't need help until they lose it all, or are actually wise with their money so don't need it.

Of course Top Rank and Golden Boy would have you believe they look after their fighters which is why other fighters should join them, but all promoters only care about money just TR and GB have a bit of a brand to protect so aren't quite as ruthless as DK who we know would kick his best friend to death over $500 (in case you don't know: he actually did).

Sad situation. I wish less boxers would end up in financial ruin.

truth is he had no choice,he messed all his money off and no one was paying the taxes on the house..so either sell the house and collect equity or let the IRS take it and get nothing..either way his mom was getting evicted
