If they are saying that the first Liston fight was fixed, why would Liston put a substance on his gloves to try to blind Ali?

Yes, it's been speculated in the past that Liston's camp tried blinding Ali. If you believe Sonny did that, I can see why you'd doubt a fix in the first fight. But who knows for sure how that happened? Liston was a 7-1 favorite. Everyone thought he'd kill Ali. Why would anyone even think to blind Ali and gain an edge, when the fight's outcome seemed a foregone conclusion to everyone?

They thought to blind him because they used the substance in previous fights. They knew Ali was slick but figured he had a weak chin. Liston took Ali lightly and got whooped. People just hated Ali back then due to his constant trash talk. All these reports or investigations are excuses, and people reaching to find fault with his victory.

If you watch the fight, you'll see that Ali was beating the crap out of Liston, who couldn't touch him. Maybe his corner realized something needed to be done and put the substance on LIston's gloves in the 4th round. Also, it's not speculation, you'll see that Joe Louis and the commentator said that something was wrong with Ali's eyes at the beginning of round five.
