Perhaps Kovalev should learn to carry guys for a few rounds - Golovkin appears to do it on occasion. Problem is I ain't so confident Kovalev could pull it off - non-stop aggression is a key component of his defense.

For comparison: defensive wizard FMJ (per compubox) got punched 230 times last year in two fights. Kovalev was hit 85 times in four.

Kova carried Boone and it got him a draw; GGG carried Ouma and he had to work late to beat the fight out of him. At least dropping everyone real quick gets you a lot of attention.

I doubt if Stevenson/Kovalev happens. It appears that Stevenson thinks he is worth significantly more than his actual value. Having Haymon in your corner is not going to get you $10 million when you are only worth $2 million.

Winning awards means absolutely nothing in terms of $. Nonito Donaire won Fighter of the Year honors in 2012 and his highest purse offer for 2013 was $3 million from GBP, which Arum refused. Then Donaire was paid $1.4 million against Rigondeaux, his highest purse to date, and lost the fight. Stevenson needs to wake up from that dream that he is living in and recognize that he is not Floyd Mayweather.

Now it means we cross our fingers (and try and generate as much fan noise as we can that Stevenson - Kovalev is the only fight that matters).

Hmm...Kovalev beat Boone twice, but the first was by a close SD.

Kovas draw was against Grover Young and shoulda been a TKO2 (or at worst a NC) but Kovalev was the victim of some bad reffing / cheating by Young.

Kovalev was dropped in Boone I in round 7 and claims to have had to dig very deep to make it to the end - although yeah, it appears he was well on top early.

And much as I like GGG, make no mistake, that was a proper war with Ouma - GGG wasn't at his best for good reason, and make no mistake Ouma was one of the top JMWs of the 2005-2010 period. Despite Ouma being past his best that was a real test of Golovkins spirit - every fighter can have off nights, but what GGG showed is that even when he wasn't on form and things weren't going his way, he's the kinda guy that'll put his head down and battle his way to victory if that's what it takes.

That willingness to dig deep is almost a requisite in a top fighter and for me that fact that it's an attribute GGG possesses makes it all the more likely he will prove to be one of the elite in the sport.

Fair enough. Kova got a SD. I have read posters write he was down in a round but I have yet to see a video of it nor is it on record at Boxrec. It may be true but I have yet to confirm it.

Stevenson doesn't need him. Kovalev needs Stevenson.
