Was it premature? A bit, but the guy was quite out on his feet. When the ref first jumped in, Johnson had an expressionless look, about 2-3 seconds later he snapped out of it and started complaining.

I would have liked at least one more good shot land, but long grueling fights when a fighter is tired and hurt and that one more punch can be dangerous. If it was earlier in the fight and it ended like that I would have been outraged. Late in a long fight it does not bother me as much.

Exactly what I thought, still not sure about the stoppage, but Johnson took a full two seconds before he reacted to the stoppage. He looked really out of it, and Stevens was coming on like a buzz saw.
