Magomed Abdusalamov "Improving" After Skull Surgery

The following article was written by Ring Magazine's Lem Satterfield, and was posted on January 31, 2014. It's the latest news I could find on Mago's condition:

After having had a portion of his skull replaced at New York’s St. Luke’s Hospital last week, Magomed “Mago” Abdusalamov is expected to soon return to the Helen Hayes Hospital, in West Haverstraw, N.Y., where he is undergoing rehabilitation, according to Nathan Lewkowicz, his former promoter.

Following a brutal 10-round unanimous decision loss on Nov. 2 to Mike Perez, the 32-year-old former heavyweight contender was placed in a medically induced coma by doctors until Dec. 10.

"They took him back to St. Luke's where they did the initial surgery when they brought him in right after the fight. What they did in repairing his skull is that they used a three-dimensional printer to re-create an exact replica of that part of his skull that was removed, and they put that into his head," said Lewkowicz.

"He's still there at St. Luke's, but they will be sending him back to rehab. He's improving, which is why they prescribed another month of rehab. It's been one month of rehab, and now, he'll do another month hopefully starting in a couple of days."

It's nice to hear Mago's "improving," but I wonder just how much....

You're both welcome. It's tantalizing to read that Mago's "improving." I wonder what it really means. At least there's some positive change.

I don't like to talk about it because the same thing happened to my best friend. After they put the part of his skull back in he was still in a vegetated state for about five years before he died due to a random infection. He was alive for those five years but needed 24 hour home care and there was nothing "there", just an empty stare and random movements. I hope it turns out differently with Mago

I'm sorry to hear about your friend, Natas. The kind of damage that Mago sustained doesn't promise a full recovery, but hopefully his future is brighter. This is why the news is so tantalizing, because you wonder what "improving" really means. Is it true improvement, or relative improvement? Hopefully we'll soon know. Another month of therapy seems to indicate some hope. If there were none, I doubt they'd continue therapy at an institution.

It was an excellent HW fight between 2 very good and classy HW. I hope Mago recovers fully and wish him all the best. I also wish Mike Perez all the best. Classy dude and hope he does well.
