You don't really know that. All Douglas knows is what the ref is telling him. Had the ref had the proper count, Douglas may still have gotten up at 9. Boxers "time" getting up all the time, but they can only time it based on what the referee is telling them.

Just as a personal story: I was a student at Ohio State when Douglas fought Tyson. A couple of days before Douglas left Columbus for Toyko, he had a meet-and-greet at a local car dealer. So a bunch of us went to the event and there weren't many people there as I recall, which meant that we got a chance to talk to John Johnson and Douglas quite a bit. We left thinking that Douglas was a really nice guy, but that he was gonna get his head knocked off. Watching that fight in my college apartment with a bunch of stunned (and drunk) friends remains once of my sweetest college memories.

It was the end of the round, Buster got back up and looked good. Tyson was in no condition to continue. Both were good calls!
