Jhonny Gonzalez, the world featherweight champion of the World Boxing Council (WBC), was very annoyed as he was interviewed at the Romanza Gym in Mexico City.

Gonzalez was giving his response on the latest news that Mares was going to take an interim-fight before their rematch. The Mexican champion scored an unexpected first round stoppage of Mares last August to captured the WBC crown.

Anyone who thinks that Abner Mares of all people is scared of anybody, is a ******.

I think all the funny business that's been going on is due to GBP. I mean three of their biggest stars (Mares, Canelo, and Broner) went down within a five month span last year, I think they're just being a little pre-cautious. Abner Mares is one of those fighters that doesn't really get involved in the matchmaking process, he just lets his team and promoter select an opponent and he fights them. Mares is down to fight anybody. Any fear on his side is coming from GBP, not Abner himself.

Can someone with a little more knowledge than I give me examples throughout boxing history where a guy got knocked out in the first round and rematched the opponent?

I'm sure there are countless examples I'm just having trouble coming up with them.

Yeah after reading that previous post, I say both fighters are doing what they have to do....maybe Gonzalez finishes his next opponent like he did Mares and feels fresh enough to negotiate for May 3..

If Mares fights someone before a rematch with Gonzalez I hope it's Russell Jr. If Mares beats the s**t out of him like I think he can then Mares vs. Gonzalez II is an even bigger fight in the fall.

It's too bad the rematch didn't happen in February though, if Mares won it then he would have been on to bigger and better things already.

Mares got ktfo though in a rd. That's the difference. I think the KO can be a major issue for him mentally.

Did you even watch the fight? He didn't get "KTFO", he got knocked down HARD, and I mean very HARD, got up and wasn't smart enough to hold Gonzalez, got hit with a couple more good shots and went down again. He sat down trying to gather his senses a little bit and started to get up while the ref counted to 3 and then waived it off. That's not "KTFO", haha.
