Is Gonzalez scared of Gary Russell? Because he turned that fight down.

I'm still high on Mares and think he can get his belt back.

It looks like Jhonny put the friendship aside to let his true feelings known. I agree with him... As soon as it was announced that Mares was taking another router due to BS excuses, I said it was clear he wasn't confident going into a rematch. Another loss would truly deflate his career.

If he would have said that there wouldn't be no fuss. Instead we got the "injury" **** then completely change of opponent it seems to me he was just trying to find a way to fight someone else without actually having to man up and say he would rather do a confident boost fight first etc. The sequence of events makes it suspect.

Why is his rib injury a bs excuse??

You act like fighters don't get scared. I do believe mares was not ready for the rematch and deep down inside he knew it himself.

Mares is not scared of Gonzalez.

Both guys haven't fought since their fight in August. Mares injured his ribs and the fight was postponed. Mares wanted to fight Gonzalez in May after he fully recovered but Jhonny doesn't want to sit around until then. He will defend in March. Obviously there's nothing wrong with trying to stay active but this doesn't mean Mares is afraid to fight. The fight can be made for May. Gonzalez made a personal choice that is best for him.

The real question is do you believe Mares is injured. I do because he has never given me a reason to believe he would fake an injury to avoid a fight. I'm not saying mares wins the rematch but I'm confident he's not afraid to fight Gonzalez again.

                Here's the link below

A rematch between Abner Mares (26-1-1, 14KOs) and Jhonny Gonzalez (55-8, 47KOs) is now not going to happen - at least not in the first half of 2014. Last August, Gonzalez pulled off a big upset with a first round stoppage of Mares to capture the WBC featherweight title. Mares has a rematch clause and exercised that option. The fight was scheduled for February 14th, but then Mares withdrew with a rib injury suffered in sparring.

The fight was scheduled for February 14th, but then Mares withdrew with a rib injury suffered in sparring.Gonzalez does not want to sit around waiting and plans to defend his title on March 29th at Zocalo in Mexico City, while Mares indicates that he will return on May 3rd as part of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. pay-per-view undercard at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. We're not going to fight again, it seems that he's going to fight in March and does not want to wait until May, and I do not want to risk getting hurt again [by returning before the injury fully heals]. I understand his decision, but my health comes first. I can not fight yet and everything seems like its heading to May. Thank God my promoter supports me, and has good options for me. I already have two potential opponents [for May], but I can not give you any names because there are many things that have to be sorted out, but I can assure that I'm going to put on a great show in my next fight Mares said.

Mares needs a tune up fight to gain his confidence again.
