I have tickets for this one. I got Garcia and Ponce.
Do Puerto Rico still have this crappy open points system?
That is only if the WBC sanction the fight. I am going to. I want to see Ponce KTFO Juanma and I want to see Wilder do the chicken dance.
Estos pobres pendejos adoptando campeones. I'm from Philly bla bla. Today he comes out with "I cant speak spanish, but I'm boricua 100%." Fck outta here. Maybe is not his fault. I blame his dad. It was his obligation to teach his son about his culture.
It isn't a sht poll! It isn't even a poll, it is a reality check. Question, WHO do you think native Puerto Ricans supported when Edwin Rosario fought Hector Camacho??? Who do you think they supported when Camacho fought Trinidad??? If Cotto was coming onto the scene just now and he was scheduled to fight Garcia, who do you think native Puerto Ricans would support??? That tells you right there where their heart is, in their countrymen! If you think they would support a New York fighter over one of their native islanders, man you were born yesterday! HIS dedicated fans are from New York, right under his nose the whole time.
Rosario and Camacho were both born in Puerto Rico. Both rep PR. Problem with Camacho was what he did with his pants. You dont mess with the flag.
Camacho vs Tito, we see Camacho dressing with the US flag during the promotion. Who you think is going to win that one?
If Cintron had ever fight Cotto, then you can use it as comparison. Or if we ever see Garcia vs Verdejo, we are going to see the full effect.
He will get support in PR right now. The media is helping Garcia a lot. Saying " I will be boricua even if I was born in the moon" it is translation of one of the biggest nationalistc phrase here: "Yo seria borincano aunque naciera en la luna". So he gained a lot of fans, but hardcore fans here dont see it that way and nationalistic like plenty I know, we dont see it.

Does Danny's father speak good Spanish? If he does, then it's indeed his fault. I've never understood this. It's so easy to teach a language when you're dealing with a child. Just speak it. They absorb language like a sponge. It's so cool, and so useful. It's a tool for life.

He does. Dont know about his mom, but she might too. The problem with some of the kids is that they are afraid of the way they speak spanish and they dont want to practice. I seen it with my family. It is ******. My mom used to speak to us in spanish all the time when we were living there. My two oldest siblings are fully billingual thanks to that and many of cousins from their generation too.
My parents are straight from michoacan Mexico, it was hard work but they became citizens and have worked hard every day of their lives. I speak fluent Spanish have been to Mexico dozens of times. I'm very proud of my roots but I'd rep my USA in the ring. If Mexico loved me and wanted me to fight there I'd go. Go for it Danny, it's up to you

From the time a child is born until they're of school age, the rudiments of a language can be taught. If the kid doesn't have any friends to speak that language with, the parents can still insist they speak their native language at home. People are just too lazy.

Nice post, man.
Growing up in a Hispanic neighborhood, I spoke Spanish on a regular basis with my friends and family. I lived I Austin, TX for a few years and recently moved. I tried speaking Spanish with a Mexican cashier once and she looked at me, confused. I spoke about it with a childhood friend who happened to be living in the area. He told me that was a regular experience he had, that the Mexican-Americans he ran into often didn't speak Spanish. Actually, his theory was that they avoided speaking the language outside the home. Whatever the case, it's a shame. Not only should one's culture be preserved, but speaking multiple languages is very cool and very useful.

No, the comparison DOES work. It does not matter where Rosario and Camacho were born, it is where they lived and the culture they adapted. Camacho left Puerto Rico when he was 3! The trunks Camacho wore were only a part of the differences. Rosario was a native Puerto Rican, Camacho was from New York. That clearly indicates the obvious difference and who would support who so it is relevant. But Puerto Rico is desperate for a champion and who can blame them for the long lineage of Boxing heritage. But their support will be conditional and limited and as long as Garcia realizes that he is just a temporary fix for them, the better off he is if he faces a native Puerto Rican so that he does not have any delusions of grander when they drop him like a hot potato in favor of one of their own. There will always be that barrier up between them.
