Comments Thread For: Promoter’s genius evident with Bradley-Pacquiao rematch

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - I ask you, Tuesday morning fight club, who among us wouldn’t want to be Bob Arum?

Regardless of whether you laud the Top Rank consigliere for a track record of boffo box office numbers or view him as clearly the frostiest participant in boxing’s 21st century Cold War, it’s already apparent that age 82 agrees with him more than most.

When word arrived a couple weeks back that all parties agreed on the rematch between Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley, the old man had not only laid groundwork for the current leader in the “top fight out there to be made” sweepstakes – but he’d also presided over the greatest turnaround from “ho hum” to “best in show” since Tom Brady took his passing act from Ann Arbor to Foxborough.

The parties will get together for the first time today in Los Angeles for an introductory news conference that’s sure to bring the media world’s heaviest sitters to what’s sure to be a rocking buffet spread.

Still, notice how it says “presided over” and not “orchestrated.”

Because as much credit as Arum might deserve for lifting Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao to above-the-fold status during respectively esteemed runs at TR, only a full-throated Pollyanna could say a Pac-Bradley re-do would have been on anyone’s must-see radar 19 months ago. How can you have Bradley 4th on your P4P list?

Nevermind the other weights, just Manny being 8th vs Bradley 4th seems very questionable to me.

Bradley clearly lost to Manny the first time, then he beat two tough opponents by a close margin (Provo and Marquez).

Manny was beating Marquez, about to go up by 2 rounds, when he walked into a massive right hand and lost. Credit Marquez for a great punch, but does one punch really make you think that Bradley is better than Manny?

Just to erase doubt that he'd never be able to fight at a top level again, Manny went out and dominated Rios in very impressive fashion.

People say he's lost power and didn't KO Rios, but he didn't KO Margarito at the height of his success either, and he hit Margarito with many more shots than Rios (and got hit far more by Margarito than Rios).

Of course Floyd being the #1 WW in the world is crystal clear, but it seems pretty clear to me that Manny is #2 WW. We should see for sure soon I suppose, that's why they fight these matches... but Bradley seems like he went from being quite underrated to quite overrated by so many.

But I will say this: is Arum any more worthy of scorn than Golden Boy, or any other promoter? No. How people can look at or listen to Schaefer and not think the guy's at least as reprehensible as Bob I don't know.

Arum is a snake, but nevertheless a clever one. Pac got knocked out and fought Rios as a comeback, with many laughing at his predicament relative to Floyd who was dealing with Canelo and maintaining his unblemished record.

Despite the limited in-house fights Arum has, it's now the opposite. Most are scoffing at Mayweather-Khan/Maidana, and are far more looking forward to Pac-Bradley II.

Nice piece by Fitzsimmons although I don't agree with some of his points.

Bradley made this rematch matter with his win over Marquez. Without it, no one would care at all.
