JMM-Morales negotiated in 2006. Marquez turned down a career high payday of 1.5 million.

Prince made Marquez wait for 2 years. Marquez was low profile back then and his style wasn't that fan friendly. (Marquez adapted later on to mix in more offence) When the time came, Prince offered Marquez a career high payday of $400,000. JMM and his team turned it down.

JMM and his team have made some strange decisions in the past when it comes to money fights. Barrera, Morales, Prince were the money fighters back then. JMM wasn't recognized. When the opportunity knocked at his door, he blew it.

He asked for more money... but then goes out of his way to face Chris John for $30,000 and change. ??? Morales was a big legacy fight then, and JMM blew it.

You justify Prince, Morales, and Barerra not wanting to fight him because of his low profile yet crucify Marquez for not fighting a shot Morales who had just gone to war with guys like Pacquiao and Barerra, how is that a legacy fight? No his legacy fight was against Pacquiao who destroyed Morales and Barerra.

The truth is he was overshadowed and never given a shot at featherweight until these other guys needed his name to sell. You can't blame him for not doing these guys any favors when they took him for granted. He didn't blow an opportunity like you say because he went on to fight larger purses than the one's you mentioned.

Don't try to make it seem like the Chris John fight was some sort of cherrypick. He practically fought for free at the guys backyard trying to unify the division. Pulling off a win like that would have a higher impact on his resume than beating guys clearly past their best.

You dudes in here taking shots at the great Marquez should be ashamed....Marquez can pick and choose at this stage of his HOF career....he's not one of the hungry undernourished dudes like Provodnikov....that dude need the names, Marquez need a WW strap....even if Provodnikov would give Marquez hell (I think he would) it doesn't mean Marquez is obligated to take this tough fight when in all actuality it's a no win situation for the Mexican great

A win over Provodnikov does nothing for Marquez's legacy imo....it's funny how the new dude gets more love than the old great who held us down with some of the most memorable fights in the last decade and some change....certified bonafied legend of the sport and nothing less than top 10 of his era...personally I got him in the top 5....bottom line, respect the vet

Marquez is not a pup looking for a bone, that's Provodnikov....Marquez is too thorough to be that pup's bone....that's all he's saying....Marquez probably bleeds more than any boxer in the sport atm besides Gabby....but they both get their asses off that stool to answer every bell....don't talk that scared **** about certain fighters....Marquez is definitely P4P one of the bravest fighters I've ever seen....kill that noise!!

Juan Manuel Marquez conceded Friday that he turned down a fight with Prince Naseem Hamed, the World Boxing Organization featherweight champion.

Marquez, of Mexico City, will meet Daniel Jiminez of Puerto Rico in the 10-round featherweight main event Sunday at the Union Plaza. The six-bout card is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.

After being turned down by Marquez and reportedly others, Hamed went on to knock out Las Vegan Augie Sanchez in the fourth round Aug. 19 at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Conn., in an HBO-televised fight.

"I had been waiting two years," said Marquez, speaking through a translator. "Now they want the fight. I wasn't prepared. They did not give me sufficient time to get prepared."

Marquez had been the No. 1 WBO challenger for almost two years and did not get a shot at Hamed during that time, according to Fernando Beltran, Marquez's Mexican promoter.

Nacho Beristain, Marquez's manager, criticized the Hamed camp's negotiating tactics. "They want to get us when all of our energies are gone (from negotiating)," Beristain said. "They are only playing with our heads. We never want to fight (Hamed). Who do they think they are? They came out with an offer of $400,000. It is not worth it."

HBO, which televised the fight, loved it so much they asked for a rematch, and Top Rank began working on it. But Marquez rejected a career-high $750,000 for the fight, asking instead for $1.5 million -- the entire license fee that HBO had offered for the rematch.

Then, following Marquez's easy decision victory against Victor Polo on May 7, duBoef said Top Rank offered Marquez $1.5 million to fight Erik Morales this fall on HBO PPV. DuBoef said the Marquez camp asked for $3.5 million, a figure even the popular Morales has never been guaranteed for a fight.

Former gym partners, they had a falling out, and went separate gym directions. Must have been too many wars in the gym, that Marquez came up short on. Twice in recent history, Marquez was offered Morales twice, most recently in the last couple years, and Marquez declined both. Marquez knows he is a stepping stone to Provo, because Provo will knock Marquez out if he is baited to climb in the ring with him.

Let me remind you that when the fight matterd most(between Morales and Marquez) Morales ducked him at least 2 times when both of them were in their prime. So learn your history.

Marquez has given us some of the greatest fights in his time, he is the one fighter to do what seemed impossible and knocked out who a large majority of boxing critics claimed was the greatest pound for pound boxer at the time. There is no taking that back..

Truth is, the man is still a boxer, he is NOT retired and should not be rewarded with any easy passes. He could be the baddest fighter around, beat everyone, does that mean you ease up and become understanding that he is 40 and could possibly lose to Provodnikov sidelining his legacy. NOBODY in boxing should have a pass, not Floyd, not Pac, not GGG, not WARD, not anybody. Marquez is no one special to steer away from a dangerous fight. The people on here.. really defending Marquez's position.

I love boxing and believe if you are in this brutal sport, you are the type of warrior that would be willing to fight anyone in a fair match to prove why you are the best. Stop defending his tactics, they are silly. If you want to see how a person really ducks a fighter, it is happening RIGHT NOW.

All I'm saying is that Marquez has been very selective of his opponents since 2010 and has not necessarily faced the best possible challengers. In fact, several have called him out to fight. And he refused.

Other boxers challenged him...who were legit contenders, and the man refused.
Khan, Rios, now Provo.

He and his management team have made questionable decisions. Opportunities came to him and he turned them down.

I'm just saying JMM is a Diva and has been acting like it for a while. If you don't want to face challenges from contenders...then just retire already. No one is asking you to stay in the GAME. It just becomes annoying after a while...the whining just makes it worse.
