Marquez might fight Pacquiao again for welterweight title

MANILA, Philippines – Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez is now having second thoughts about his stance against a fifth fight with Manny Pacquiao.

In the past, the Mexican has consistently refused to fight Pacquiao again after knocking out the Filipino in their fourth faceoff.

But it could change if Pacquiao wins the WBO welterweight title from Timothy Bradley this April.

“Right now at this stage of my career I want something that will leave a legacy – I want that fifth championship,” Marquez said in 3 More Rounds.

“I always said I wanted to fight Pacquiao and beat him and I did. I do want that [welterweight] title, but I’m not obsessed with it, though it would be a great achievement,” he added.

Marquez tried wresting the WBO title from Bradley last October. He, however, got outpointed by the unbeaten American.

He sought for a rematch, but Bradley chose to face Pacquiao again.

Marquez's only other option is Ruslan Provodnikov. The “Siberian Rocky” has already called him out for a WBO junior welterweight fight.

But the Mexican did not bother hearing the call out.

“Fighting with Provodnikov would not gain me anything. I would be fighting for a title that was already mine before and if I beat him, it won’t mean much," said Marquez. "I want a transcending fight, something that will be historic."

Marquez said he might fight in Mexico to keep himself active then wait for the outcome of the Pacquiao-Bradley fight.

If the welterweight title fight does not become available, then he will hang up his gloves for good, said the 40-year-old boxer.

“If that does not present itself, then I’m closer to retirement,” said Marquez.

I kind of just want Marquez to retire, although I would like for Pacquiao to have a shot at revenge.

JMM was slipping in his fight with bradley. He will be 41 by the time PAC-JMM 5 rolls around. I think JMM did the best he could with the KO, he's only gotten older and father time is looking like it caught up with him a bit. But...

No doubt in my mind PAC-JMM 5 would be the biggest fight in boxing at the time besides pac-may. hands down

Marquez keeps telling his family and the public, media he's going to retire but keeps saying one more.

Sadly he's gonna end up another boxer saying just one more, one too many times. He'll go out on a loss if he faces Pacman again, great shame to push it and ruin it.
