Gonzalez plans on fighting at the end of March which only gives him a month to get ready for a fight in May.

I get that, but it's not a super quick turn around if he fights some tomato can he can get out of there quickly,,,

No one is gonna give him as big of a payday as mares rematch

Probably for the best, have a feeling it ends up ending in a similar fashion. He'll have to try to get revenge at some point, he is all heart..but maybe let gonzalez go off and take some more punches before the rematch is made. I wasnt quite sure how much bigger johnny would be but once they were in the ring Mares looked out of his element. If they were the same class I could chalk it up and say OK he got caught, but it doesn't look like he can take the punch Johnny is bringing for that weight. That punch IS going to land again over the course of 12rds

He could have stayed busy, GBP offered him a fight with Gary Russell. But I guess Jhonny was shook because he turned it down.

Yah declining to fight Gary Russell was a pu$$y move i must say. I bet if Russell was the champ and Gonzalez the challenger he wouldn't turn down a fight with him. This whole rematch lost all it's luster to me already. An early stoppage of an opponent caught cold and Jhonny wana play like he's a big dog on campus. Like he aint still Jhonny Gonzalez. Your still the same Jhonny, Jhonny. Just now you have a belt that you will either hold on to for 0 fights or possibly 1 fight [if he fights a tune-up to stay busy]. If he fights a top contender for the strap I don't see Gonzalez having even 1 successful title defence. And clearly neither does his team, hence ducking Russell Jr. Fighting him and beating him would be HUGE for Jhonny's name as Russell is considered by many a top 10 prospect and future boxing star. Shame on you team Jhonny.

Also, Mares should not be so willing to fight someone else first. He should have his sights set on only Jhonny. Kinda makes it seem like he was second guessing himself and didn't really want the rematch. Taking a fight against a big name instead of a possible tune up to stay active and shake off the cobwebs is just ******. If Mares happens to lose before getting a rematch with Gonzalez, it would do a lot of damage to his marketing power.
