Comments Thread For: Mares, Gonzalez Going in Different Directions For Now

A rematch between Abner Mares (26-1-1, 14KOs) and Jhonny Gonzalez (55-8, 47KOs) is now not going to happen - at least not in the first half of 2014. Last August, Gonzalez pulled off a big upset with a first round stoppage of Mares to capture the WBC featherweight title.

Mares has a rematch clause and exercised that option. The fight was scheduled for February 14th, but then Mares withdrew with a rib injury suffered in sparring.

Good for Gonzalez giving GBP the finger and saying, "you won't pay me crap an d use my heritage for sales". Mares, should do the same.

You didn't even read the article. Mares wants to fight in May. Gonzalez wants to defend in March. Looks like Jhonny is the one saying no at this time for his reasons. I don't blame him .

They were probably looking to put this on Floyd's undercard.

Mares should take a decent but softer touch, while Gonzalez defends in March, then both can fight in the fall.

NO my friend its not that easy,at least I dont think so..Its my humble opinion the Mares was approached to be with mayweather undercard and was promise maybe same money but with more exposure with a softer opponent,he will win, millions will watch and then he could maybe come back in sept to fight johnny,I called bs his injury and there is no way johnny will wait till may,I mean,he is the one that won and champion, not mares..Its all a business strategy.
