Don't understand world champs in rehab

I never understood great world champions with addiction and alcohol problems.
Boxing world champions are the definition of self-discipline!..no one does it
better! Succumbing to addiction is the total opposite of the mindset of a
world champion boxer.I am not making fun of anyone at all with this,I just
think if an addicted boxer starts training like he did for a fight,I think the
addiction would subside.I just don't know ANY alcohol or drug addicts that
get up at 5:00am and jog 5 miles!

Professional boxing causes many ex-fighters to be chemically imbalanced. Fighters in general come from very rough backgrounds and could have a lot of things stored away in the 'closet'. A fighter is a rare individual who trains hard and at times parties hard all the same. Add in the fact that many fighters friends are from the street and that when many fighters careers are over they deal heavily with depression. It's really not hard for me to see them turning to drugs or alcohol for comfort or escape when it's over. Not the right choice but I can see how it could happen................ Rockin'

a lot of what underlies drug and alcohol abuse, apart of a multitude of other variables, is perfectionism. while they are fighters, it is a great benefit; and the small group of those who might be predisposed toward abuse are able to use the dedication you mention for good. But once they retire, and have introduced unforseen variables liek getting hit in the head for years on end things could get complicated. There is no longer an outlet and the perfectionism that boxing requires might speak to why it might occur more regularly in fighters. (i'm not even sure it does occur more often in fighters than it does in the general population, it might seeing as many fighter come from 'troubled' backgrounds

          Fear of failure
          Fear of making mistakes
"the should of, or could haves", etc, etc

World class boxers will almost inevitably have huge egos that lead to a variety of destructive habits.
