    Puerto Rico apunta a ser el escenario del primer combate del año del doble campeón junior welter Danny 'Swift' García.

    El jueves, su padre y entrenador, Angel García, reveló que su hijo va camino a defender su invicto y sus dos coronas el 15 de marzo en la 'Isla del Encanto' ante el mexicano Mauricio Herrera en una función que tendrá lugar en el Coliseo Rubén Rodríguez, de la ciudad de Bayamón.

    Será el mismo escenario en el que se han presentado en el pasado figuras como los ex campeones Félix 'Tito' Trinidad, Miguel Angel Cotto, Juan Manuel 'Juanma' López y Román 'Rocky' Martínez, entre otros.

    Para García que viene de vencer por decisión al argentino Lucas Matthysse en un gran combate el pasado 14 de septiembre en Las Vegas durante la antesala del choque en el que Floyd Mayweather Jr. derrotó a Saúl 'Canelo' Alvarez, será su primera presentación en la tierra que vio nacer a sus padres.

    García -- cuyo padre Angel, es natural del pueblo de Naguabo, al (Este de la Isla) y su madre de Ponce (al Sur) -- encabezará la función que será difundida por la empresa de televisión Showtime.

    También el evento podría marcar el inicio de las copromociones en la Isla entre la empresa local Puerto Rico Best Boxing y Golden Boy Promotions.

    "Pelearemos el 15 de marzo ante el mexicano Mauricio Herrera que fue el primero que le ganó al ruso Ruslan Provodnikov cuando éste último tenía unas 15 o 16 peleas profesionales", reveló Angel García a ESPNDeportes.com.

    "Hay un por ciento alto de que sea en Puerto Rico. Será un evento televisado por Showtime y sabemos que sería muy bueno para Danny, que es puertorriqueño a pesar de que muchos dicen que no lo es porque no nació allí. Pero sus padres, ambos somos nacidos y criados en Puerto Rico", recalcó. García tiene marca invicta de 27-0 con 16 nocáuts.

    El 'Swift' tuvo un 2012 y un 2013 de ensueño con dos victorias sobre Erik Morales, una ante Amir Khan, contra Zab Judah y finalmente ante Matthysse. "Para mí es un orgullo que Danny vaya a pelear a Puerto Rico. El se siente muy puertorriqueño y nos gustaría que la gente lo quisiera como otro boricua más", señaló.

    Herrera tiene marca de 20-3 y 7 nocáuts. En el 2011 fue el primero en vencer a Prodovnikov al superarlo por decisión unánime en un choque en el que estuvo envuelto el título de Norteamérica de la Federación Internacional de Boxeo.

    La función que aún no ha sido anunciada, pero que se espera sea encabezada por el duelo entre él y García, podría incluir a otras grandes figuras del boxeo puertorriqueño que actualmente y por primera vez en 40 años está huérfano de campeones nacidos y criados en esa isla caribeña, cuna de grandes monarcas.

    El evento podría incluir peleas en las que estén activos los ex titulares Juan Manuel 'Juanma' López y Román 'Rocky' Martínez. Ambos vienen de ser vencidos por Miguel Angel 'Mikey' García en el 2013.
    "Danny le ha demostrado al mundo que es uno de los mejores 140 libras del mundo. Todos dijeron que Matthyssse era un matador, y que Danny le serviría de escalón, y mira lo que pasó".

    Angel García añadió que su hijo ya comenzó a entrenar para su choque con Herrera en donde nuevamente expondrá sus fajas de Súper Campeón junior welter de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo y la faja del Consejo Mundial de Boxeo.

    "Esa es la pelea que tenemos ahora y para la que estamos enfocados. Sabemos que no es un rival fácil. Venció a Provodnikov quien probó ser un gran peleador. Ya llevamos tres semanas trabajando enfocados", apuntó.

            Interesting. Felix Verdejo also said he was gonna be fighting on the same date but he's with top rank. So we shall see, the future of Puerto Rican boxing is Felix. Such a big star in the making, and such potential. Just hope he stays focused and doesn't pull Fransico bojado.
