V. Klitschko offered deputy prime minister government post

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich has offered top government posts to opposition leaders in a bid to solve the country’s political crisis.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk, leader of Ukraine’s largest opposition bloc, was offered the role of Prime Minister, replacing Mykola Azarov. The world champion boxer turned politician, Vitali Klitschko, who leads Udar, was offered the post of Deputy Prime Minister, and would also be put in charge of humanitarian affairs.

This is merely an attempt by Yanukovych to muzzle Klitschko's party, as well as his allies. Deputy Prime Minister is a sort of "gofer" job, and there are usually several of them. Obviously Yanukovych is not stepping down, and not calling new elections although if the protests continue and grow larger, he will have to-or else make a completely police state.

Even if Klitschko had been offered the PM job it would only be help according to the President's good-will and Yatsenyuk or he'd be demoted at first safe opportunity. I haven't read anything recently in these deliberations of Yulia Tymoshenko, who had always been a hot topic with UDAR.

Correct. He is simply trying to basically find a solution for himself which would still allow him to cling onto power till the election next year while somewhat satisfying the opposition and the people enough to stop the rioting. Unfortunately for him, no dice - he doesn't seem to understand that he has dug his hole, now there's no place for him to go but into that hole.

By the way, you guys should read this interesting article about the special riot police, one can imagine Vitali Klitschko's alter ego in another life could have made a perfect candidate!

Opposition Says No to Ukraine on Power Share

With mass protests spreading across the country, Mr. Yanukovych proposed one opposition figure, Arseniy P. Yatsenyuk, as prime minister and another, the former boxing champion Vitali Klitschko, as vice prime minister for humanitarian affairs. Mr. Yatsenyuk is a leader of Fatherland, the party of Mr. Yanukovych’s archrival, the jailed former prime minister, Yulia V. Tymoshenko.

“No deal,” Mr. Yatsenyuk wrote on Twitter, addressing Mr. Yanukovych as thousands of angry protesters streamed to the still-occupied Independence Square, undeterred by the biting cold. “We’re finishing what we started,” he added. “The people decide our leaders, not you.”
