He is his own worst enemy. When he starts gaining momentum, like he did with Love and Quillin, he starts to clown instead of doing real work. Instead of seizing the prize, he does not surge.

I sort of agree with this. I wonder if it's his endurance/stamina, a loss of focus, or he just gets hesitant and overly cautious.

Dierry Jean has crazy separation in his abs.
