Shaw, DiBella Set The Record Straight

The old saying is that when it rains, it pours. Such is the case in the recent developments surrounding the proposed middleweight title bout between undisputed champion Jermain Taylor and top rated challenger Ronald "Winky" Wright.

In a story published by the St. Petersburg Times on Monday, it was first revealed that Wright fired promoter Gary Shaw. The sudden dispatch of Shaw came on the heels of finalizing contracts for a June showdown between Wright and Taylor, scheduled for the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Shaw was able to convince HBO to pay $6.5 million for the fight.

Reports quickly surfaced of a backdoor meeting between HBO's Ross Greenburg, Wright, Winky Promotions partner Chris Lighty and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaeffer. Neither Shaw, Taylor promoter Lou Dibella nor Jim Wilkes, Wright's advisor, knew anything about the meeting. Shortly afterwards, Wilkes resigned as Wright's advisor.

"That's where everything blew up," Shaw said. "Ross Greenburg told Winky that the money HBO put up was for a 50-50 split. That's an outright lie and that is part of the litigation that is going on right now. That was never the case. The split was 55-45, and Lou DiBella can tell you that."

DiBella feels the blame lies more with Wright, rather than HBO or Greenburg.

"I was shocked when Wilkes and Gary called me," DiBella said. "I don't believe he scheduled a meeting with Schaeffer, Winky and all them. The most important thing was to make the fight. Why would Ross do anything to jeopardize the fight from happening? I think he (Greenburg) got sandbagged. [details]

This is the part of boxing I hate. Just box and do what you do there is no reason besides greed and corruption this fight should not happen.

There's a lot of talk circulating about the possibility of Jermain Taylor defending the middleweight titles against Winky Wright. The main issue in this discussion is the fact that Wright is supposed to have refused the fight, citing the money not being right, and of course, he's right. The last thing that Taylor needs now is to fight Wright, who, though it would be a decent fight, is likely to frustrate and outbox Taylor out of the title. Getting rid of Bernard Hopkins once and for all is the beginning of what should be Taylor's love affair with the boxing public. Hopkins was respected by all but liked by very few as champion, and Taylor, always touted as a top prospect, did the industry a favor by ridding Hopkins of his position. Also, Taylor comes off as a very nice guy. I've seen coverage of a lot of fighters who try to look squeaky clean, but i've either heard different, or just didn't believe them, but with Taylor, I get the feeling that he is straight up with his polite and respectful demeanor. With the correct matchmaking, Taylor could become a very big star and could help HBO gain some ground this year. Wright however, is trying to get his own promotional outfit together for a future outside of his ring career, he knows that he is never going to be a star as Taylor might become and he needs to prepare for the end of his fighting days as they fast approach. I agree with the sentiments that Taylor is a flawed boxer, but compensates for that with his size, strength and aggressiveness, thus, he would make an interesting fight with Wright. The challenger, in this case Wright, is correct to hold out for more money in his position, however, Wright's ascension is not hat is best for boxing. Now more than ever we need marquee names, and though they are not readily available, boxing can help itself by not throwing those that have a chance to become big names into the most threatening fights available to them. If Floyd Mayweather hasn't had to fight anyone of worth for two years, I don't see why Taylor has to fight Wright immediately. In the end though, there is already a good deal of public pressure surrounding this potential fight. Maybe i'm underestimating Taylor in thinking that he would lose to Wright, and the only way I can explain myself is to say that I am through with underestimating Wright.

Now we know what's realy going on behind the scene.

              FACTS:
              a) Sturm was offered $1 Mil and German T.V. rights not $700,000 as it came out earllier in some articles and still he refused.

              b) Wilkes declared that the HBO money put up was on a 50/50 split while the truth is it's 55/45. He resigned as Winky's adviser.

              c) Winky is disowning Gary Shaw as his promoter but he doesn't have any other licensed promoter to handle the negotiations.
