Which type of jab is the most effective?

We all know the jab is probably the most important punch in this sport, the key tool in a boxer's armoury, the general basis of every fighter. However, many different fighters have developed or used their own style of jab and have had great success - so, with this in mind, which jab is the most effective or desirable to possess?

I'll just name HW fighters as examples for the moment:

Unorthodox, loose jab used by guys like V. Klitschko

    Quick, flicking jab like Ali's

Piston jab used by guys like Holmes, Liston

Well schooled, telephone-pole long jab like Wlad's and Lennox's

Stiff, powerful, accurate but slow jab like Foreman (more in his comeback)

Now, bear in mind the question is not about which heavyweight had the best jab, simply the style of jab that were used by the fighters I mentioned,[U] in general - which jab style is the best/most effective/most desirable?/U]

Having a hard time picking between piston and well schooled-pole long jab.

Gun to my head, I'm picking well schooled-pole long jab.

Give me a good, stiff jab. I like the jab to the stomach a lot, too.

Holmes is considered to have the best jab for a reason.

All of the jab types have their advantages, Holmes is generally seen to be the possessor of the 'best' one but it's hard to really define 'best', it's subjective again because the uniqueness of other jab styles like Ali's or Vitali's worked for them in their own way in terms of dominating and bewildering opponents.

Effective for what? A piston like jab is effective if you want to score with the jab, a flicker jab is effective if you want to make your opponent react and open himself up for a power punch, a hard stiff jab is effective if you want to do damage with your jab. It all depends on what you wanna do.

I picked piston jab because it has less drawbacks than the others.

I think variety is the key. Keep your opponent guessing!

Correct, this is why I think the unorthodox jab is very underrated, very hard to get a read on it, it can come from different angles and set up shots. Also, since they may be coming quickly from angles, the opponent may not see them, thus being more hurtful.

That's pretty much it, good analysis.
