Really good fighter in his day..not an atg but world champion level... In modern terms I would rank him above guys like Jorge Castro, Yory boy campos, ponce de Leon, gatti but a level below Jose Luis Castillo, corrales, cotto,

Only lost to Oscar n Floyd,,, not a shabby résumé

I think he was a better than average champion. He was a decent puncher and a good boxer and his work rate and chin were also good. I wouldn't call him a great champion but he was pretty good.

He was quite good-for a while, and a good champion, but he wore down. He had a huge advantage in that he was a physical marvel just under 6 feet tall. He had big problems making the 130 lb limit in his last few fights, and lost only to two good fighters.

He had very bad luck to have had throat cancer for a number of years and which killed him just a few years ago. Bob Arum used to have him brought to and from his chemotherapy sessions for years, paid for them, and supported his family as well.

{(Arum's loyalty to his fighters makes me think all the more on why he supported Margarito during his legal problems over that used gauze pad in his bandages. He knew it was nothing. (and in fact the Commission actually declared that Margarito didn't know that it was a used pad although he got a suspension)}.
