Price getting ragdolled wasn't a surprise to anyone who knows heavyweight boxing. People are far too impressed by someone KOing punchbags. I said multiple times what would happen as soon as he got cracked by someone who is streetwise.
As I've said, Wilder is next. He cannot hold a shot.

Mares-Gonzalez was Upset of the Year and also should have been Knockout of the Year.
No one expected Mares to get destroyed in 1 round like he did.

I think Maidana-Broner upset for was more significant. Mares was a fun little guy to watch but ultimately, he didn't bring as much to the table as Broner in terms of future and marketability when compared to Broner. Broner set himself at such a high bar at a young age and people were listening and talking about him. His loss was a more humbling lesson and discussion than when Mares lost. Sure, Gonzalez I believe is over the hill and it makes his win that more impressive, but it happened and I think I forgot about it a day later. Broner loss still makes discussion regularly which makes it IMO more significant.

Broner was more hype than substance at 147. Mares was a legit p4p'er going into the Gonzales fight.

While that's not a terrible pick, I don't agree with it. I do admit that Mares losing shocked me quite a bit. I didn't expect that. Gonzalez has quite a resume and he has some real power though. Broner-Maidana was an upset, but I don't think it was too huge. Maidana is relentless with a ton of power. There were many doubts about Broner at WW and just in general. I saw a Broner loss coming, although I didn't know it was gonna be that soon. Just off the top of my head, Price-Thompson gets it for me. I remember being most surprised at that.

Upset of the year should be synonymous of the most unexpected result and I have to agree than only few picked Gonzales to win over Mares. Mares was undefeated and in a time span of 19 months won titles in 3 different divisions (bantam, super bantam and Feather weights). He was a legitimate top 10 LbxLb after going through 7 title fights in a row against 4 champs & 2 ex-champs. And although Johnny had world titles in 2 division and also had 46 KO's out of 54 wins, it is also true that Gonzales is in the last stage of his career but somehow getting Nacho Beristain in his corner got him a new strength.
Regarding Broner's defeat, I just have to say that I remember Ponce De Leon climbing divisions and beating Adrien but not getting the decision as well as watching weak Malignaggi loading lots of pitty punches over Broner so it was just a matter of time to see some solid boxer, like Maidana, defeating the cheap imitation of Floyd. In summary, Boner's defeat was not a surprise for me.
