Can I ask something? why do you need to call someone by their race, "hey Ni g g a". Why cant you just say " Hey dude" or whatever. Some posters here saying that in Spain they refer to blacks as n e g r o s, does that make it right just because everyone's doing it? hell na, I DONT CARE WHAT CONTEXT IT'S USED. I can't go around calling white people " red neck" or whatever. No excuses for what Sergy said.

And people must not come with that " but blacks call each other that the whole time" bull crap, cause it's not the same thing.

People saying, " he from Russia, he don't know any better' -GTFO with that BULL S H I T.

N i g g e r is a noun in the English language. The word originated as a neutral term referring to black people, as a variation of the Spanish/Portuguese noun negro, a descendant of the Latin adjective niger ("color black").[1] Often used disparagingly, by the mid 20th century, particularly in the United States, it suggested that its target is extremely unsophisticated. Its usage had become unambiguously pejorative, a common ethnic slur usually directed at blacks of Sub-Saharan African descent.

In "Romance languages", the color "black" is designated by words derived from "niger" (Latin). In my native language "black" is "negru" (the Black Sea is Marea Neagra...)

(Nota bene: in Russian there is a total different word for "black" color... But there are some black African-Russians in Russia -- they call them "негры", i.e. "negros"...)

It's not just the words, but the cultural appropriateness of the slur. Like I said earlier, in Quebec French the f-bomb is no biggie but if you tart talking about chalices in tabernacles at the dinner table you may get thrown out of a house. This stuff really is different, with different levels of tolerance, in different places. If he actually hates black people, that's bad. If it's just gross cultural insensitivity, then it's something he should still probably work on.

I think Sergey is a bit of a racist. You can see how he really enjoys it when he knocks out an African American.

I fully agree - the connection between the terms "n***er" and "slave" is (or used to be) quite US-specific, due to the history of this country.

In German-speaking countries, the word "Neger" was quite common to describe black people until about 20 years ago. No offense was meant, it was just the standard term - in Vienna for instance, there was (until very recently) even a type of candy bar called "Neger-Brot" ("Brot" means bread), which was basically a chocolate bar with peanuts in it - obviously no negative connotation here, people loved it.

Nowadays (in a time where US sitcoms are on German TV every day), the term "Neger" is considered racist, and is thus not used anymore (maybe the old 50+ generation sometimes still uses it); "Schwarzer" (= "black one") is used instead - which is perfectly fine. One has to understand though that the meaning of the word itself has not changed - "n****r", "Neger", "negro" are all derived from the Latin "niger", which simply means "black".

Yes you can. It's perfectly acceptable to verbally/physically abuse white people today.

You just said "I DONT CARE WHAT CONTEXT IT'S USED". So if a black person uses it, that context is perfectly okay. Double-standard.
