Police in St. Petersburg, Russia, will speak to WBA heavyweight champion Nicolay Valuev in regard to an incident with a 61-year-old security guard at a sports complex in the city. The guard alleges that the champ beat him. Valuev denies striking the guard, whom he says was rude to his wife after she parked in a no parking zone. At this point, no charges have been filed against the 7-foot tall unbeaten fighter.
Giant WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev could face criminal charges after claims that he assaulted a 61 year-old security guard outside the Spartak Ice Palace in St. Petersburg after the boxer's wife is said to have parked illegally.
St. Petersburg police confirmed on Friday that they were investigating claims from Yury Sergeyev, that Valuyev beat him after he asked the boxer's wife to move her car that was parked illegally Sergeyev was working as a parking attendant at the time.
According to reports Valuev is alleged to have beaten Sergeyev to the ground and continued to beat him. Sergeyev is said to be in a stable condition in hospital.
Doctor Alexander Komarov, told NTV television on Thursday that Sergeyev had suffered a concussion as well as scratches and bruises to his face.
Valuev has reportedly denied hitting the guard.
In an interview posted last Friday on Gazeta.ru, Valuyev said: "I sincerely regret the conflict, but you have to understand: I acted like any normal man in my position would have, whether he was the world champion or a simple engineer," he said. "I stood up for my wife, Galina, and my 3-year-old son, Grisha."
Valuyev also insisted that the parking attendants had hassled his wife on previous occasions. "And some time ago the attendants even shoved my young son," he stressed.
In the interview, Valuyev did not elaborate on how he resolved the situation but when Interviewed by Berliner Zeitung, he denied hitting Sergeyev.
"He insulted my wife, and then I grabbed him by the collar to bring him to his senses," Valuyev the German newspaper. "I did not hit this man."
