Comments Thread For: Miguel Cotto Gives His Opinion on Boxing's "Cold War"

Former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31KOs) would like to see Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions come together and sort out their differences.

Cotto finds himself in a good position, because his company Miguel Cotto Promotions has a good working relationship with both promotional outfits.

But some of the fighters are now suffering because big fights get roadblocked due to the ongoing rivalry between the two companies.

Well this is obvious. It's also another reason sport fans who like to track rankings and statistics of who will face who can't stand boxing. Nobody faces who they should because it just comes down to whose promoting who, who they will work with, and if the money makes sense. Forget that it's the #2 guy whose up next to face #1 guy. If there is money to be made for #1 guy to face #5 guy, then by all means, #2 guy is sitting without an opponent while #1 and 5 face each other with no merit besides money. Makes business sense, but not a sport fan statistic sense.

It is getting frustrating and I worry that boxing will become like UFC in the years to come.

How so? They just have 1 promoter and the fights people want to see get done.
I don't like the UFC as a sport but if boxing was handled that way I wouldn't have a problem with that... 1 Champion per weight and all fighting all.

you have to admit Golden Boy has been putting out some amazing cards and GB is willing to work with anyone to make not only great fites, but events as a whole. Schaefer did put his ego aside when they offered to do Mares-Donaire. They didnt even charge Paulie a cut for Senchenko fite cuz he got 300 k or less.

Monopoly is not good for an industry but boxing or sports are an exception. One Promoter with all the "cream of the crop" fiters and one sanctioning body for titles. This may drive down paydays for fiters but if one promoter has all the fiters he wont mind matching them as he wins either ways.
