Most street fights do end up on the ground so I believe an MMA fighter will always have the upper hand. Boxers need to land a good punch before a tackle though which is all about timing and precision. Thugs don't need either, they pull out a gun with little to no effort and beat both from a safe distance.
My friend taught me if you think the other guy can and will fight, punch first. Always get a start in a street fight.
