Promoter gone, questions remain for Wright

As Gary Shaw flew back home to New Jersey, resigned to the fact he is no longer promoting Winky Wright, and fellow promoter Lou DiBella scratched his head over the ongoing saga out of the St. Petersburg fighter's camp, Tampa attorney Jim Wilkes was making one last effort to save Wright's potential June 17 showdown with Jermain Taylor.
Wilkes had an 11th-hour meeting scheduled with Chris Lighty, Wright's manager, at the Four Seaons in Beverly Hills.
He was hopeful the contract could be signed today.
But that seems unlikely. DiBella said he is still unclear who to deal with now that Shaw has been let go.
"Who would I even talk to," DiBella said. "A company with no infrastructure, with no nothing? They don't even have a license. We're not going to be held hostage by Winky Wright."
Tuesday morning, Shaw and Wright reached a financial agreement that would essentially pay the promoter for the work he had done putting the fight together and turn the contracts over to Wilkes and Wright to pursue the fight themselves.
Marc Rattner, president of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, said Wright has never applied for a promoter's license and would be unable to co-promote a fight in Las Vegas. It would take 90-120 days to be approved for a license, Rattner said.
Wilkes said he is under the impression that Wright is licensed in New York.
DiBella said if a suitable co-promoter can be found - Wright met recently with Golden Boy Promotions - or he becomes the sole promoter, the current deal was still on the table.
But HBO's role in meeting with Wright and Golden Boy Promotions unbeknownst to Shaw, who had completed a deal with DiBella, could lead to a lawsuit by the promoter, further complicating issues.
Wright did not return messages left on his cell phone.
The current contract calls for Taylor to receive $4.7-million and Wright $3.8-million, a 55-45 split but better than the 60-40 split Wright would receive if the fight went to a purse bid.
Wright has insisted on a 50-50 split throughout negotiations.

I hate that Winky's backed out of the deal for now, but I think it will get done. I look at it like this: Winky's been getting paid less than his notable opponents throughout his entire career. Taylor's a young buck, and really is not as big a name as Wright. I think 50-50 would be the most fair split, but being the challenger, Winky should settle for 55-45. If Winky wins this one, he can get several lion's shares in defenses.Comment

he's defended the WBO title in South Africa and around England.. plus he's fought in Argentina and France. That's what that title means, you're taking what was written out of context and making it what you want it to mean just because you can.Originally posted by vB MartinThis is a lie. What other worlds was he champion of?
