Comments Thread For: Sergey Kovalev Rips Beibut Shumenov and 'Super' Status

The World Boxing Organization's light heavyweight champion, Sergey Kovalev (23-0-1, 21KOs), took a direct shot at Beibut Shumenov (14-1, 9KOs), the World Boxing Association's "super champion" at light heavyweight.

Kovalev is scratching his head with the WBA's recent decision to make Shumenov the "super champion" at 175-pounds. Shumenov has been very inactive, and only made two defenses since July 2011. For unknown reasons the WBA felt Shumenov was worthy of the new status.

Interestingly, I know its wikipedia, but the other three organisations state they are non-profit companies. Yet WBA do not. Perhaps this is the obvious reason for there many list of champions at one given time. Until everyone abandons WBA title, they can keep doing this. You get Kovalev saying this, but for the right money, he would fight for and defend that title. Until boxers and promoters say no, that is not right for boxing, i will not go the direction of the WBA, this will continue to happen.

Anyone with light skin tone getting attention = Matthysse/Power punching brawler

I have nothing to back this up but I'm willing to bet 90% of people who keep calling random fighters the new Matthysse are probably somewhat racist, IMHO

I hope Shumenov vs. Brähmer happens next so we get rid of one paper champ. Let the winner fight Kovalev, Stevenson or even Hopkins and the other paper-champ will be gone too!

I disagree with the "next Matthysse" part." He's quite a bit more polished and technically sound than that hype job. But I do agree that his chatiness is starting to get on my nerves. Not that I dislike **** talking. I just don't like it when it feels outta character for the guy doing it.

I am starting to really like Kovalev.

Ole boy got a big chip on his shoulder and a mean streak.

Seems like he's ready to get it on with anyone. No apologies.

Shumenov has been something of a joke as a titlist though. He womn the title in what was considered a robbery by most in Jan 2010 over Campillo. His first defense - Ulzelkov, was semi-respectable but since then it's been downhill.

Shumenov had an 18 month hiatus until defending against Tamas Kovacs (Boxrec #105ish) a week ago. For this he has been rewarded with the 'super' title.

Shumenov actually isn't bad, but one gets the impression he he had very little intention of doing any more than he had to in order to retain his title, and for some reason the WBA have indulged him. It is rumoured that Shumenov is not dependent upon boxing for his wealth tho' I'm not sure of the basis for this.

Nonetheless, his recent signing with GBP at a time when LHW is starting to heat up would suggest a more active future may be on the cards - if he does get back in the saddle, it is another fairly decent name in the mix. I suspect the main purpose of his sighing is to give SHO leverage at LHW with a Hopkins unification - possibly even tempting GYM into a Stevenson unifier on SHO.
