Indonesia’s former world boxing champion Chris John announced his retirement from the ring in Jakarta on Thursday, two weeks after he lost the WBA Super World featherweight title to IBO king Simpiwe Vetyeka.

John was good, but not great..He lost to JMM Imo..He kept the belt hostage and the WBA has a lot of blame on this..They preferred to make money and make him a Super Champion who never unified the belt, He was supposed to fight Gamboa,Barros, Caballero and none of this happened. For these and many other reasons I considered him a solid champion, but not a great one. He preferred to make money at home instead of testing himself against the champions of his time.

Smart for him to get out now. When you get pounded by a decent but nothing special opponent like Vetyeka, your career arc is decidedly heading downward

There were plans to battle Nonito Donaire to be great but Rigo beat him to it and the battle of 2 Southeast Asian Stars never materializes.

Got to commend John on walking away from the sport and not linger around like so many others.
