Comments Thread For: Jhonny Gonzalez Aiming To Lay Abner Mares Out Again

WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (55-8, 47KOs) wants to prove to the entire world that his knockout victory over Abner Mares (26-1-1, 14KOs) was not a lucky punch, by granting Mares a rematch in February.

“We will have a rematch so I can prove to the world that my victory was not luck. I’m a great fighter and in February I'll again prove it,” Gonzalez promised. [Click Here To Read More]

I wouldn't call Johnny a great fighter, his chin has failed him in the past and he didn't look very good in his fight with Ponce prior to his upset victory over Mares.I think if Mares fights more responsible defensively he should be able to out work him enough to get a decision.

Definetely wasnt luck but the fact that he did it to a guy like mares with one punch makes you wonder if he can do It again .He's a great puncher with no chin unfortunately . If he had a chin he'd be a great fighter. Saying that he can still ko mares again if he doesn't adjust from what happened last fight.

I dont know Mares is a good fighter and just got caught, but Johnny gonna go in their guns blazing and trying to make that KO happen again so it is a dangerous fight for mares.

I'm very excited about this rematch. Johnny impressed me with how easily he disposed of Mares, and I think he'll be able to do it again. As long as he stays composed, the KO moment will reappear.

I love it that my favorite fighters will never have to be defended for being duckers. This is why Abner Mares, win or lose, is like Erik Morales, the epitome of the word "fighter". They take on all comers, no excuses.

Tough to make a prediction after what happened in the first fight. There's a reason why Gonzalez was the underdog in the previous encounter. I don't really believe in lucky punches -- Jhonny deserves credit for the KO -- but it's also true that anyone can get caught. Mares might very well avoid a big punch and do what he was expected to do the first time around. Then again, Gonzalez might've gotten in Abner's head. Either way, I'm looking forward to knowing the answers.
