Comments Thread For: V. Klitschko Steps Back, Now WBC Champion Emeritus

The Board Meeting of the WBC and its president Jose Sulaiman have decided to appoint Vitali Klitschko, one of the WBC’s greatest and most successful Heavyweight Champions, as Champion Emeritus.

The WBC show his full support of Vitali Klitschko in his political activities in his home country Ukraine and understand that he is unable to defend his title inside the ring in the foreseeable future. Therefore the WBC appoint Klitschko Champion Emeritus and thus give him the opportunity to decide at a later point whether he wants to resign from professional boxing or fight for the WBC Heavyweight title again.

Vitali has been a great champion.

His feat of coming back at age 37 after four years off due to injury to win the WBC title and then dominating all who fought him over the next 5 years is an amazing feat.

There are some interesting potential matchups for the WBC title. Because of Berman Stiverne's situation with Don King, a fight between Chris Arreola and Deontay Wilder for the WBC belt is a possibility.

        Is that still not resolved?

        Sucks for Stiverne

If the WBC is smart(i know thats a long shot)

They should have a HW tournament consist of-
#1. Bermane Stiverne (Canada) vs #4. Bryant Jennings (US)

#2. Chris Arreola (US) vs #3. Deontay Wilder (US)

#5. Mike Perez (Cuba/Ireland) vs #8. Tyson Fury (GB)

#6. Derek Chisora (GB) EBU vs #7. Manuel Charr (Lebanon/Syria)

If stiverne don't fight arreola for the vacant belt then it's a shame wilder gets to step in. Arreola will crush him in my opinion. Id rather see fury or stiverne again against arreola. Good luck to vitali in his political career. Hopefully he can make a difference...

                Why?
Stiverne has been waiting for a while. wasn't his eliminator against Ray Austin?
Or was it against Arreola. Anyway... he would've waited a year by then.

They can duke it out for the right to fight Stiverene later

He says he can't see himself at this point being able to fight again due to the commitments...but anyway, great champion who will be missed...but I think the WBC made the right call - this will allow us boxing fans to see some explosive fights with some fresh new faces, and Vitali can focus on his real big fight for the forseeable future. And if he comes back to win the title again, I think he will be the first 4-time heavyweight champ?

Good luck Vitali, great man, great champion, great legend - focus on making a change in Ukraine and I will hope to see you in the ring one more time someday soon!

I agree, although Bermane Stiverne is getting kind of short changed here cause he did beat Arreola for the eliminator didn't he?

Either way they need to set something up.
