Why do people say Mike Tyson was overrated?

The fact that this guy was listed at 5'11 1/2 (when he was really closer to 5'10, his listed height was exaggerated) and knocking guys out (good ones too) twice his size in devastating fashion is extremely impressive.

So why do so many people say he was overrated? What more do you want from a guy that was dwarfed in comparison to so many other guys?

A lot of people claim he was past prime against Douglas, where he was merely 24 years old. If he did become past prime I think yes he is a bit overrated. That is if I even believed he past it that young, which I don't Tyson's problem was that he got too popular too fast, and too young. I mean Tyson was like Jordan, Michael Jackson status as basically a "kid". He was a crossover superstar, internationally know, famous in America, Asia, Europe. Very influential character to many kids who never even liked boxing.

You think of all this and you see why he crumbled so fast, not to mention the people surrounding him. Your outside life does catch up to you in that ring.

Tyson's style of fighting is kind of like elite Tennis players. You only have a certain shelf life at the most elite level with that style.

People think he's overrated because of his losses to Holyfield. That's the real reason. By that time, he was sniffing coke, boozing, and not training Cus style.

Don't even hold the Douglas fight against him. Was ****ing Japanese **********s and partying, whatever.

no one can dispute how good he was in his teens to very early twenties but he was his own worse enemy and faded fast. It was sad to see.

weather he is over rated or not is due to one's perception and I can neither argue for nore against it, but when he was prime he was phenomenal

He beat all the best guys out there but they were not an overly impressive list comparatively speaking and he lacked longevity at least at the very top of his game.

If you are talking like the back in the day argument who is better Tyson or Ali then yea he is over rated to be in that conversation but generally speaking now he is properly ranked he had a very good run and hung around for a long while he just isn't at the very top all-time.

Because if you honestly think he was the best heavyweight ever or even in the discussion, that's overrated. So yeah, Tyson gets overrated.

The fact that people think Ali vs Tyson is a fantasy fight is why Tyson is overrated. He was great, not Ali's ultimate rival great.
