Back from the Super Brawl in Boston (spoilers)

Mostly dissapointing undercard. In the first fight, the opponent with a 0-1 record may have been the most petrified boxer I've ever seen. He was stiff and nervous for as long as he lasted.

Later, Yuri Foreman fought a completely mismatched local kid and after a short, one sided first round he got up from a knockdown and told the ref he didn't want to continue. His purse was witheld.

In the main event, by far the best and most competitive fight (because it went the distance) John Duddy outworked Julio Jean for ten rounds. Despite his highly-tauted two fisted attack, he was unable to put Jean in serious jeopardy. A Jean uppercut in one of the earlier rounds snapped Duddy's head back but overall Jean wasn't enough of a puncher to endanger the undefeated prospect. Later in the fight Julio showboated in the clinches, sticking his tongue out for the cameras. In one memorable moment, in the closing seconds of the 10th, Duddy lifted his right arm in victory only to have Julio do the same.

It was a good scrap and Julio Jean deserves kudos for a courageous effort in front of a crowd that wanted to see him get bombed out.

In attendance, among others, were Norman Stone (who I shook hands with), Peter McNeely, and Kevin McBride who just seemed like a nice guy who you couldn't wish any ill luck towards.

...Good stuff Kid!!! Did McNeely seem as dumb in person as I suspect he is?

I was also there and, yea, it was a weak but PREDICTABLE show.. but as far as Peter goes... NO, Peter is not dumb at all. Pete is a very cool guy who really, really knows and follows the game of boxing and could come to a booad like this and compete with ANYONE here in terms of boxing knowledge. And for the reord, he is also a cool guy that really likes to talk to boxing fans that approach him and think it SUCKS when guys like you try to dismiss him and make him look bad with stuid comments like that. Hey, the guy did what he could do and was far far from being as bad a boxer as many "fans" make him out to be. And while I am at it, whether it was a smart tactic or not, Peter was the only guy that had the balls to say I AM GOING TO GO RIGHT AT TYSON AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS and then actually go out and do it. "Better fighters" than him like Seldon, Norris, etc went in and went away without the biggest fights being put up. Would YOU have the nerve and guts to walk that walk and stare the man down and then at the bell rush right out and take your chances? Of course not and remember one final thing... that fight was stopped not by Peter but by his trainer and Pete was still trying to fight back. He was outgunned but he tried and if you don't think he did and won't give him the credit he deserves then you just dont know what it is REALLY about in that ring. (And your big claim to fame will remain the fact that you can dogg a guy that actually does while you sit behind the comp in seclusion.)

He looks slightly more intelligent in person. I had a laugh when he put his arm around the female boxer (really hot for a female fighter, with surprisingly strong calves for her size) who was called into the ring with himself and McBride (and many others). McNeely looks smaller than I'd imagine though, like he's lost muscle mass since he retired.

McBride is a huge guy but all smiles. Doesn't look like he'd kill a fly.

Also Norman Stone started to get pissed off over something (after Foreman's opponent quit) and I saw him walk over to the ring in a hurry. I almost expected another Stone brawl to break out but some of his friends (I think they were) coaxed him back to his chair.

When I met him I said "You're Norman Stone right?" and he stood up, smiled and shook my hand. Seemed like a perfectly affable guy to be completely honest. I asked him how John Ruiz was doing and his answer was "very good". I was going to ask him how he felt about the Valuev fight but I started to really get into the main event at that point.

Hope Peter's doing alright because he had a fairly well publicized battle with alcohol and drugs over quite a few years, but the last I heard he had kicked them both (Feb 2003 issue of The Ring describes both his addictions, some mention of weight loss because of drugs, and subsequent recovery).

Yeah, I hope he's doing ok still some three years later.

Pete is doing OK. He lost that money and his career went downhill quick and to top it all off, to many he is the butt of a joke... but through all that he reamins real cool and a good guy. If you ever saw him at a fight and approached him you would feel like he was your best friend. Good guy

Hell yes I agree with this poster ice man, not to mention that this was tysons first fight back from prison and I remember the fight mcneely looked like he wanted to go on even if it killed him, e was just so out classed which does not make him a punk or a bum just not an elite HW or even a contender but he has many vitories on his record and many were some were at his level and he beat them what more do you want a man does what he can

I've been fan of McNeely's for awhile and have kept tabs on his career and his struggle with drug abuse. I wish I hadn't written "he looks slightly more intelligent in person", because I have great respect for his courage as a fighter and did not mean to belittle his intelligence. He did come across as the big dumb brute in the old pizza hut commercial and my response was only in fun and in reference to that. I can see how all the jokes etc. would really hurt his feelings.

I know for all of his limitations on the world level he would crush 99.99% of the people on this forum (with the exception being you John) inside of a round in the ring.

One question though John, is there a gym you would recommend in Boston?
