He didn't get the best of Kovalev. The only thing GGG's trainer said was that Kovalev lacked the killer instinct he needed to get in good work for GGG. The trainer then mused that this could be due to either fear or respect from Kovalev. No where did he say that he "got the best of him"

Kovalev would annihilate Golovkin. And I'm a huge fan of both.

They lied about the sparring to boost GG's rep. GG's trainer is a talker, and Kovalev has a much different story of what happened in their sparring match.

This report is from an interview with Golovkin's trainer Abel Sanchez about when he was training both for a while (Sanchez trained Kovalev for several fights before he moved on to John David Jackson).

Ignoring the motive for hyping his own fighter, he forgot to mention that Golovkin was already a world champ at the time & had been a professional for many years, while Kovalev had I think 9 fights at the time & was relatively new to the pro ranks...

It is also not the first report that has come out that Kovalev was not fully confident in his abilities early on in career, & he has alluded to it himself in interviews.

This is obviously not a problem these days, & Kovalev has grown into one of the more self-confident fighters around, willing to go into his opponents back yard fully confident in his abilities to take anyone they put in front of him.

The above image is reply from Kovalev himself: "There were many sparring sessions. Each one went differently. But I can say for sure that Gena is very strong, and it was really difficult to box against him"

In this video Kovalev says: "I learned a lot from Golovkin in our sparring sessions. He has a great personality as well. He will become an ATG. I respect him very much, he's a very good person".
