Larry was criticising Ward for targeting fights with Chavez and Froch instead of moving up to the fight Stevenson and Kovalev.

Anyway, no one else wants to fight Kovalev
Whats so wrong about trying to secure a nice payday, this is prize fighting right? Health and longevity aren't guaranteed in boxing especially in Ward's case since he's been injury prone during his career. I don't blame fighters for going after bigger money when it's available. A fight with Kovalev wouldn't bring in the same as a fight with Chavez jr or Froch.

Personally, I'd love to see him take on GGG sometime next year then move up in 2015.
It's Larry saying this, not me. Ward can stay at 168 forever if he wants as far as I'm concerned. Imo there's no obligation for any fighter to fight outside his preferred weight class.

In saying that, Stevenson would be a great win for him. It's something he should consider imo.

Again, it's Larry saying this. He has a right too btw, speaking as a fan of the sport he wants to see competitive match-ups. Somehow that's racist.

After 35 years, Merchant retired from HBO... Though, I guess he's still speaking for HBO...

... Lately, the TV networks (HBO Sports, of course, included) seem to face tough business choices when it comes to boxing events...

Ken Hershman (HBO Sports President) came from Showtime... Ken Hershman was the one who organized the famous Super Six tournament -- from which Ward emerged as a P4P top fighter.

When Hershman switched to HBO, Ward did the same... Since then, Ward fought Dawson -- the fight sold 7,611 tickets at Oracle Arena, for a gate of $706,469... After the surgery, Andre Ward was targeting Sartison or Truax (!?!)... Instead, HBO imposed the Rodriguez fight (with Rodriguez coming from the "huge" win in a Monte Carlo tournament). That match was expected to yield a payday of $3.5 million from HBO... The Ward-Rodriguez fight venue was Citizens Business Bank Arena (Ontario, California), which was almost full with 4,158 in attendance, and the live gate pulling in $277,374.00 in ticket sales (!!!).

Now: please read again what Merchant said and try figure out...

Anyone that thinks what Larry wants is relevant should get back on their meds. Who cares what Larry wants???????? I'd likd to see Larry train for a fight, do a 24/7 against someone other than his ego......That's what's wrong with boxing, guys going up and down in weight is going to end up with someone killed. Then I guess the ole fool will be satisfied as the d**** the sheet over a dead fighter who moved up and took a blow meant for a 175-180 fighter while only weighing 168. Hey Larry, do the sport a favor RETIRE & STFU.......

In an interview with the Ring, Ward basically said he has little interest, in the foreseeable future, in fighting Bernard Hopkins (which understandable), Golovkin, Stevenson, and Kovalev.

Ward on Hopkins: "I'm more interested in guys within my legacy, and, basically, within my era. The young guys, and the guys that are coming up"...

So, he meant the likes of Golovkin, Stevenson and Kovalev, right? Wrong.

On the above "trio" Ward said: "I don't see a win over either one of those guys right now catapulting me past the Floyd Mayweathers or something like that"...

But, after he beat the "great" Rodriguez, the question remains: just who and when does he want to fight "to get him past the Floyd Mayweather"?

(Nota bene: I truly believe that Ward actually has the required skill set in order to beat all these guys...)

Chavez, Froch... Ward knows Mayweather's notoriety isn't primarily based on legacy, but rather celebrity. Despite what he says, Ward's looking for celebrity wins to cash in and boost his name. If it were really about legacy he'd have moved up already because he's virtually done at SMW.

At #83 I've mentioned the figures that Ward made in his last two gates ... I did it on purpose...
When one (who's ranked as P4P #2) gets a 4,158 in attendance, and a gate of $277,374.00 I suspect that something strange is happening...

                  Tell me I'm wrong...

Pardon me for not picking up on it, but what is the inference you're making?

Don't know about the claims of racism, I just expected better from Merchant. Although Ward made the fight look easy, it's a risk anytime a fighter comes back from a serious injury combined with an extended layoff. Merchant seems to totally disregard this important fact. Although it's well known that Merchant favors brawlers over boxers, I expected him to be impartial when analyzing fighters, shame on me.
