Carl Froch recovered from a first-round knockdown to stop George Groves in the ninth round in Manchester on Saturday night. Froch retained his WBA and IBF super-middleweight titles in an engrossing all-British fight. Referee Howard Foster infuriated Groves and 21,000 spectators by intervening to end the fight after Froch had finally landed some meaningful punches to leave the challenger wobbling for the first time. Groves, who suffered his first defeat in 20 fights, protested that he was able to fight on almost immediately after Foster declared the fight over.
