Comments Thread For: Manny Pacquiao-Brandon Rios: Pre-Fight Report Card

It’s not often a major pay-per-view event features two fighters coming in off a loss. When one fighter is Manny Pacquiao, loser of the 2012 Fight of the Year to Juan Manuel Marquez, and the other Brandon Rios coming off a split of Fight of the Year caliber wars with Mike Alvarado…

    …well, there are exceptions.

Whether fans at home see this as one remains to be seen. Any Pacquiao fight is still going to do a considerable number. However, with an undercard that can best be described as “at least Bob Arum can’t stick us with Butterbean anymore,” a lot rides on the main event. We’ll see what sort of hit the Pacquiao brand may have taken in the Marquez loss, and the Bradley official loss before it that remains hotly disputed by many.

comparing Rios to Margarito? Margarito was already a done deal since the Mosley fight. Got his block knocked off!! Rios hasnt had his block knocked off yet, Pacquiao has though. BIGTIME! Or has everyone forgotten that?

        Good assessment.

I've often found it very surprising how few people seem to recognize the damage Pacquiao took in the Margarito fight. In retrospect, it was quite ****** to put him in with such a huge guy (by Pacquaio's) standard, just to be able to give him another weight class to win in. It was a huge risk, and I think Team Pacquiao paid more than they realized at the time. Of course, given Pacquiao's loyalty, he'll take whoever Arum puts him in with, and Arum's concern is and always has been about maximizing Bob Arum's money.

Look who he's been fighting. Only Tony had ever been stopped of the foes since Cotto. Robinson went the route with many top guys. He had A power in any class.

                Guaranteed action fight.
Unlike THE ONE we saw. Waste of money.

True, but Rios hasn't fought any opposition nearly as good as Pacquiao, and Brandon's got slow hands and lousy defense. The only reason why he has a shot in this fight is because of his power.

Upsets happen all the time in professional sports, but it would be surprising if that was the case here.

If Pacquiao loses to a guy like Rios he might as well retire.

A one-sided action fight. Add in the weak undercard...definitely NOT worth $70.
