There is no one more highly rated than Froch other than Ward so facing the real champ seems like the only logical step other than going up to 175.

No way that should happen.
He should fight Bika, Abraham, Stieglitz, DeGale again before he entertains the thought of a Ward fight.

I do think he's left himself with limited options, any fight other than ward will be seen as taking a step back. Plus it'll probably be a few years before he makes the same sort of money again.
