Comments Thread For: Ward-Rodriguez Now Non-Title, Weight Deal Reached

Lou DiBella, promoter for undefeated Edwin Rodriguez, has advised BoxingScene.com that Saturday's fight against Andre Ward will now be a non-title encounter.

Rodriguez (24-0, 16KOs) was set to challenge Ward (26-0, 14KOs) for the WBA super middleweight championship. However, he was unable to make the super middleweight limit of 168-pounds at Friday's weigh-in. Rodriguez came in at two-pounds over, at 170-pounds, while Ward easily made weight at 167.8-pounds.

People are quick to throw around unprofessional and whatnot but the man simply outgrew it, I hope he doesn't do the same mistake others have made by trying to make '68 again, that right there is what pisses me off. Judging by his struggles Ward's work should be easier tomorrow night.

Ward made weight and he was off for a year and a half-ish.
Rodriguez had three fights during that time

Lol Edwin did all that complaining for more money and now he has to give up 20% of his purse. I guess ward was right when he said he knew in previous camps how Edwin had trouble making weight and wearing plastic sweat suits

Just looking at the pics before hearing the news, I KNEW he had trouble making weight (whether he had made it or not). He looked ****** in. Ward had mentioned about a week ago he knew Rodriguez was having weight issues.

It sucks that it is a non title fight now BUT if Rodriguez manages to knock him out/win, which is highly unlikely, it would still be a a great accomplishment. War drained Rodriguez!

"...where Rodriguez will be unable to weigh no more than 180-pounds."

So...he'd have to weigh more than 180 pounds?

                  ...

Sounds like the same thing that happened to Mikey Garcia when he just couldn't make the weight anymore, he was sick, vomiting, etc. Sounds like Rodriguez is really sic, "He can't even spit". Sounds bad. Rodriguez does not have JuanMa Lopez in front of him, this is Andre Ward. And 180lbs fight night clause doesn't sound like enough rehydrated weight for Rodriguez's size. This is going to suck for Rodriguez, I was hoping for at least a competitive showing from him but now i'm not expecting event that.
