    The Great White Hype

GIVEN the 'Great White Hype' concept, who would rank in the top 5 as the greatest white hypes of all-time?

I would include the Klitschkos, Michalczewski, Hatton, Calzaghe.

    DISCUSS.

I don't understand the implication. Are you trying to take a subliminal shot at those fighters as over-hyped?

The Great White Hype was to me one of the best boxing movies I have ever had the pleasure of watching!

But back to the subject: To be a "Hype" the fighter would have to have little or no substance to warrant the excessive or unearned acclaim or reverence that he is getting.

And CLEARLY none of the fighters you have mentioned fit that description.

If your talking white fighters that have been hyped and not lived up to their expectation, none of the above fit that bill. Vitali klitschko is a 3 time heavyweight title holder and former Lineal champion. Wladimir is a two time title holder, the second reign consisting of 15 defences, 3 major, 1 minor and a Lineal title. Dariusz michalczewski is a two weight world champion, former unified and Lineal champion he defended his title 23 times. Ricky hatton two weight world champion, unified and lineal champion at JWW, title holder at WW. Joe Calzaghe is a two weight lineal champion, who defended his WBO title 20 times while unifying with the IBF, WBA, WBC titles.

Tommy Morrison, Gerry Cooney, David Lemieux these are white fighters that have been hyped and not lived upto their potential. But there are fighters of all races, Rocky Juarez, Jeff lacy, Andre Berto. These are fighters that were also hyped up and failed to live upto their handlers expectations.

Cheech Marin's character 'Julio Escobar' is exactly how I imagine don Jose suliaman. The scene where he agrees to bump up Irish terry Conklin in the rankings for 'money, sex and drugs' is hilarious.
