The way I always understood it, a "cross" happens when the opponent leads with the opposing hand and you throw a "straight" over it. A "straight" is simply when the dominant hand is thrown in a straight line. They're essentially the same punch. Interestingly, there is no such thing as a "right hook" (although I purposely use the term myself), only a left hook. I don't know why that is, but not too many people seem to know that little detail.
You're talking about the cross counter. When Rigondeaux throws his left hand, the punch doesn't move in straight line but in a slighty curved angle:
