Two Suspects Arraigned on Alexis Urbina's Murder

Urbina Suspects Held on $1M Bail

    (Associated Press)

PHOENIX -- Two men were each ordered held on $1 million bail Tuesday in the beating death of a 17-year-old national champion boxer from Phoenix.

Alexis Urbina was found unconscious and covered in blood in his family's south Phoenix home on Sept. 3, according to police. The teen who aspired to be an Olympic boxer died of his injuries two days later.

There was no obvious sign of forced entry into the house, but Urbina's family told police some of his boxing memorabilia was missing.

Urbina won the 141-pound Youth Men's Division at the USA Boxing National Championships in April at Spokane, Wash.

Robert Chavez, 22, and Joseph Jessie Corrales, 23, were arrested Friday night by Phoenix police.

Both men had their initial court appearance Tuesday on charges of first-degree murder, burglary and trafficking in stolen property.

Neither Chavez nor Corrales has a lawyer yet. Public defenders were being appointed to represent them, with status conferences scheduled for both men Nov. 15 and preliminary hearings Nov. 19.

Court documents allege that Chavez and Corrales went out looking to rob someone and "Alexis looked like an easy target."

Several people came forward and told police that Chavez and Corrales offered to sell them a cellphone, laptop computer and other property reportedly stolen from Urbina a few days after his death, according to a probable cause statement from police.

One of the witnesses looked through the phone and found photos of Urbina on it, according to the documents. The witness recognized Urbina because he lived nearby, police said.

The police report didn't mention whether any boxing memorabilia was recovered.

This won't bring Alexis back, but I'm glad these two (if they indeed commited the crime) have been tracked down.

It was great to see they made arrests. I hope Alexis's family obtains a measure of closure when this is all said and done.
