Comments Thread For: Magomed's Former Trainer on Perez Loss, Post Injuries

Trainer Danny Garcia, the former coach of Magomed Abdusalamov (18-1, 18KOs), discussed the boxer's recent fight with Mike Perez, which took place on November 2 at New York's Madison Square Garden. Garcia trained Magomed for four fights, but then the Russian boxer relocated from California to Florida, where he started training with John David Jackson.

The moment the first round ended and the guy walked over to the camera to check out the damage to his face on the jumbotron you knew he was in trouble..between rounds 1/2 all he kept talking about his nose. As a fan of the sport I am disgusted that Jackson did not pick up on this, when your fighter is more concerned with the damage done to him than listening to instruction it's time to call it a night.

I keep thinking about him. I hope he pulls thru. I don't think anyone's to blame. Mago is so strong and tough, he took those shots , but he was landing shots and still in the fight. The corner was thinking , he can still KO him. Having a punchers chance can be a boxers worst down fall.

              in my opinion

and im no trainer, but if my boxer has a broken nose & a possible broken jaw after the 5/6th round, in my mind i am really considering stopping the fight. There comes a point where, regardless of how powerful my guy can hit, if he's getting hit more often, sometimes taking 6/7 punches unaccounted for, especially in a heavyweight fight, i have to look out for the best interest of my fighter. period, end of discussion.

I'm not going to sit here and blame his corner, the ref or the doctor, but damn, i kept telling my boys(who were watching the fight with me) that the corner needs to step in(think it was the 7/8th rounds).

Hoping and praying for Mago.....its a cruel sport that we love. and this was a definite reminder
