Sounds like an excuse to me. It wouldn't have made any difference between the outcome of his fight with Floyd whether he had fought Cotto beforehand. If Cotto had won against Trout, then Canelo-Cotto would've been made already.

Very winnable fight for Cotto, even at this point. Roach may have rejuvenated him a bit, and at the very least I'm sure his confidence is in a good place right now. Canelo is still quite green. And as someone has already mentioned, the kid's conditioning is one of his weak points, and with Cotto hopefully dedicated to the body again, that could spell trouble.
