Comments Thread For: WBC, Promoters Pledge Over $50,000 To Help Magomed

The Federations of the WBC and promoters who are loyal to it have pledged more than $50,000 dollars for Magomed Abdusalamov, who recently suffered a stroke and is still in an induced coma after Saturday's fight with Mike Perez.

Heavyweight Magomed (18-1, 18 KO's) suffered a blood clot on the brain, following a slugfest in Madison Square Garden, in which he also broke his hand and his nose, before losing a unanimous decison.

At the World Boxing Council Convention in ****kok, Thailand, WBC Executive Secretary Mauricio Sulaiman focused on the plight of Magomed, as the top priority of business on the agenda. [Click Here To Read More]

Aint promoters supposed to carry or have a medical insurance? not to blame no one, but when a judge or referee screw up, everyone blame them, some commission force them to quit or dont give to many aasigment to them. Now what about trainers, and cut-mans? who dont stopped fights like this or exposed their fighters to dangers...aint they supposed to get some kind of restriction, suspension,or courses?

This all sounds pretty crazy to me. I never fought on a show where the promoter didn't have insurance on me to cover my injuries sustained in the fight. I've never needed it thank god, but I don't see why Mago would need money for his medical bills. I'm happy to send money to help support his family, pay for their expenses while he is in the hospital, etc. but to say he needs money for his medical bills is misleading--- I HOPE. If there was a huge show on HBO like the one he was injured at and the promoters/HBO didn't bother buying insurance for the fighters, that's criminal. I'd also expect any managers of the fighters to demand insurance be a part of the contract they should be ashamed. I'm sure we don't know all the details but it seems shady to me that they are saying medical bills. I hope this money is just a fund for him and his family because we should not have to pay for their negligence and greed if they didn't have insurance for the bout.

If they purchased the minimum coverage required by law of 7500 dollars, that wont even come close to paying his bills. Neither will 50,000. It's nice they are giving him 50k, but that seems more like a publicity move. What they really owe him is to pay all of his medical expenses. Not like they don't have the money.

It would be nice to see some of Boxings biggest bread winners, such as Mayweather, Pac, and Cotto put up a little donation to help out in situations such as this. These undercard fighter often bring the most excitment to a there crowds. Im sure a $5,000 or $10,000 dollar check would'nt kill them.

It would just show a fraternal brotherhood type look since there know "Players Association" ...and all the peachy stuff...

Good stuff. If he needs more though, they need to oblige. As does HBO.
