The Heartbreak of a World Championship

On Saturday night, in Atlantic city, Gabriel Rosado found out what can happen in a world championship bout. He was, for all intents and purposes, the better man throughout the second half of the fight, yet all three judges had the champion, Peter Quillin ahead by a virtual shut out. How that is possible? Well this is boxing.

To add to that rather disturbing group of cards was a cut caused by a beautifully barbaric Quillin jab. It was a bad cut no doubt but this was a championship fight and Rosado, the challenger was backing the champion up. The cut wasn't bothering him and he was taking next to nothing in terms of punishment. Sadly the fight was stopped in the first 40 seconds of the 10th round, the records book will show yet another TKO victory for Quillin and Rosado's spirited effort may well be forgotten. In a bygone era there would mostly likely have been an instant rematch, now I highly doubt it. The powers that be will keep Quillin away from someone like Rosado until they can get Kid Chocolate a big payday.

Sergio Martinez next? If that is the case then the young man from New York will be in for a painful ride.

As for Rosado, there is not much he can do, he has been stopped twice by two of the best in his division, in both outings he showed he was more than just an up and down brawler. This is a fighter with terrific heart, good power and a high ring IQ. I really hope he can come again.

For the record I had it 86-84 Rosado going into the 10th.

What are your opinions? Do any of you believe Quillin is ready for Sergio Martinez?

I agree with your score. It was an Al Haymon set up from the start. He wants Kid Chocolate to be the face of the middleweights. I like Quillen but Rosado was working him.

Quillen needs to rematch Rosado or take out the europeans and pray Martinez isnt the same because even the Martinez that fought Murray would have clowned him last night.

The cut was really bad, but Rosado should have been given the rest of the round. If it got worse or Rosado started taking punishment he wasn't in earlier rounds, stop it after the round.

And those scorecards were atrocious. It's not right that judges can do that to a fighter. Corrupt bull****.

The thing about the cut, is the doctor supposed to wait until after it becomes career threatening? Isn't the doctor's job to prevent it from getting to that? It was already boarderlining TKO6 bad.

Even in your picture you can tell that Vitali has multiple cuts, lacerations and swellings. Add to that in the last couple rounds of their fight, Lewis landed some hellacious shots, they shook my teeth and I was probably 3 rows back.

Quillin did nothing to shake up Rosado apart from the "knockdown", in fact Rosado was taking the initiative has he had done for many rounds earlier. The cut was, at that point, nowhere near career or life threatening and Rosado was not hurt. If anyone looked like finishing the fight off badly, it was Quillin...then again, none of that matters, if you take into account the judges scores. If the fight had gone 12 he would have lost by a land slide.

Doctor made the right call imo.

Is Sergio Martinez not inked with HBO?

Disagreed with your score OP, I think I gave Rosado 3 rounds. While he did hurt Quillin once, I felt his pressure was ineffective for the most part.

              Its part of the sport.

The cut was caused by a punch. Its Rosado's job to punch Quillin and not get punched in the face. The doctor did what he thought was best for Rosado.

The cut was nasty and located in the worst spot possible.
