He could but a Martinez fight is morr lucrative right now financially and legacy wise.

Beating Martinez > Canelo right now. He can get that fight afterwards after Canelo gets a win first and maybe another jr mw title.

Cotto is a free agent. Dibella was trying to get HBO to do a two fight deal with him with the 2nd fight being against Martinez but HBO for whatever reason declined and went with Top Rank for a one fight deal with Rodriguez.

Several industry sources have advised BoxingScene.com of the eye-opening details in relation to Miguel Cotto's upcoming fight being secured by HBO. According to parties with knowledge of the details, the HBO brass approached promoter Lou DiBella with the idea of securing Miguel Cotto for a 2014 showdown with WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez. DiBella, who has a good relationship with Cotto's adviser Gaby Penagaricano, was informed that Cotto was likely going to fight on Showtime in October - but the Puerto Rican star hit a roadblock in terms of the money that Showtime was willing to offer up for his next fight.

No. You need to look up what the word lucrative means.

Oh, and Cotto can do whatever the hell he wants to do... he doesn't need Top Rank. This is a fact.

Top Rank is superfluous and highly irrelevant when it comes to Cotto fighting Canelo.

No doubt HBO and Top Rank would make Cotto-Martinez a PPV, but they'd be lucky to get 500,000, unless they put Chavez Jr. on the undercard.

Cotto-Canelo with a decent undercard would reach 1 million buys.

                    No brainer for Cotto.
