Tony Weeks was dead wrong...

I think a lot of fans new to the sport are not understanding what Weeks did. Its not uncommon for a ref to want to see for himself what a fighter wants. Especially in slugfests where a lot of heart is on the line, there is nothing wrong with asking the fighter if he wants to continue. It all helps the ref make a better decision.
Weeks did nothing wrong and continues to be a top ref.Comment

I remember seeing this happen - Michael Katsidis vs. Graham Earl - and it was the right decision. After getting knocked down Earl came back strong in the round knocked Katsidis down (if my memory serves me right)Comment

The problem i have is he should have stopped the fight even without the corner saying stop it or alvarado. If alvarado said he wanted to continue, he would let him fight? He was taking a bad beating a stumbling all over the place with no legs, it was clearly time to stop it!Comment

Yes, the problem with bypassing the corner's pleas (to stop it) is, what if Mike had said he wanted to continue? Does the corner then argue with him or Weeks to stop the fight? The problem i have is he should have stopped the fight even without the corner saying stop it or alvarado. If alvarado said he wanted to continue, he would let him fight? He was taking a bad beating a stumbling all over the place with no legs, it was clearly time to stop it!Comment

i thought he would get counted out as well
you don't count to 10, you wave the fight off @ 10. weeks could have easily called that fight off, as alvarado cut it so close.
in weeks' defense, and i've discussed this with some bsceners, alvarado essentially had two chief seconds. he has his "trainer" and then rudy hernandez, who is a cutman by trade, who gives him instructions.
you only get one chief second, and i think he's the only guy allowed to stop the fight for you. i know your cutman cannot stop it if he's onyl being brought in as a cutman.Comment

mercante threw it back.Originally posted by DeeznutsFound it ridiculous that Alvarado's corner wanted a stoppage of the fight and Tony Weeks decided that the corner's decision was not valid. The corner is there to guide the fighter and protect the fighter from himself. That was a bad move. So if the corner would have thrown in the towel while the round was going, he would of threw it back?

He used to be really good. he caught a case of Joe Cortezitis.Originally posted by The Weebler IWeeks first long count for Alvarado was wrong too, he wanted to keep him in the fight even when his corner didn't. Taken together with his poor performance in the Matthysse fight, Weeks has shown himself to be a partial hometown referee.
