Tuesday was marked as the Welsh Day in the Kazakh city of Almaty. Two first-seeded Welshmen headed further, outpointing capable opponents in tough fights. The difference, however, is telling. While Andrew Selby looked confident and ready to take his division over, his compatriot and #1 rated welterweight Freddie Evans was given a present for the second time in a row, getting a questionable decision over skilled Kenyan Rayton Okwiri in what many thought was the latter’s fight. Evans was harshly booed by the audience.
Other #1’s have also got through and looked convincing in doing so but two #2’s failed to reach the quarterfinals. Cuban Lazaro Estrada looked slightly better than his Uzbek opponent Fazliddin Gaibnazarov, while #2 Mexican Marvin Cabrera was eliminated by Armenian Aram Amirkhanyan. Other upsets were mostly local and not as telling as aforementioned surprises.
