Martin Murray not happy with Wood fight

Murray frustrated with inactivity since brave Martinez defeat as Wood bout is confirmed

'It's not the fight I wanted, going to the other side of the world and defending my [WBA interim] title on his home soil but there's nothing I can do, it's the only option I've been given,' Murray told Sportsmail.

'I've taken the fight to keep my position strong which will hopefully get me a world title shot next year.

'I'm not happy coming from the best performance of my career and the biggest fight of my life to get told I'm not going to be fighting on an English TV station or in England.'

Murray had been linked with world title fights against Peter Quillin and Gennady Golovkin but both failed to materialise.

Quillin's promoter went as far as to say Murray's representative was 'impossible' to deal with - although Ricky Hatton responded by saying the money on offer was not sufficient.

'I hadn't heard of it until the fight was passed,' Murrya added. 'He never even contacted me to say he'd been contacted.

'Golovkin was mentioned, they mentioned a date to me but didn't mention any type of purse.
    '

Instead Murray will face Wood who has lost three of his 16 fights.

'I've only watched a little bit of him; from what I've seen he's quite awkward and a bit of a brawler,' he said.

'He's only had 16 fighters but he's been in with some experienced fighters like Anthony Mundine and Sam Soliman.

'I'm going to be expecting a tough fight. he's going to well up for it, he's not going to want to lose on home soil.'

Sounds like Murray could jump ship sooner rather than later.

After showing some early promise, Hatton's promotional outfit has gone right down the shitter. Think he's more concerned with training his fighters rather than actually promoting them, wouldn't be surprised to see Murray follow Quigg's lead.

Frustrating to see Hearn hold the monopoly on Sky, Warren still isn't investing in great cards and the other promoters don't get any chances. I think the promoters are definitely detrimental to the sport over here, something needs to be done asap.

Yeah, have to agree, Murray shouldn't have to be travelling 10,000 miles to Australia to fight Garth Who after his performance in Buenos Aires v Martinez.

Agreed. It sucks, damaging to the future.

Hatton promotions, and he cried when Carl frampton left him. Hatton ducking the GGG fight looks ****** considering that Murray is travelling to Australia to defend his interim belt against a guy who has nothing to lose and everything to gain. And why wasn't Murray told about the GGG offer? He genuinely looks like he knew nothing of it.

I wouldn't really blame him. Murray's just hitting his prime, arguably beat top MW Maravilla, and yet seems to be being kept in the dark by his own promoters.

After the Martinez fight, Ricky was gushing with how Martin was getting 'loads of offers' but yet ends up fighting an essentially meaningless fight with Wood.

The GGG 'offer' was originally more of a request for availability, but apparently Martin hadn't even been informed, despite Hatton implying (on his behalf) that he wasn't really ready yet.

The Quillin offer I hadn't heard of, but if the Rosado offer is anything to go by the £s might not have been great - the thing is, apparently Martin hadn't been told either. For a title shot Martin mighta been willing to take a smaller payday than is fair, but it looks like he simply wasn't told.

Murray is possibly in the best position he'll ever be in, and perhaps entering his prime. Now is the time for him to roll the dice, or at least be allowed to make that choice. I'd be extremely POed at a promoter who made such key choices without even consulting me.

Murray may not get the kinda chances he has now ever again in his career, and what has been done so far by Hatton Promos appears (at the least) to be a breach of trust.

Martin needs to think seriously about what's in his best interests and act accordingly.
